Under Lubricated/Over Lubricated

We see weapons daily that are either under lubricated or over lubricate. Most of the time it is due to lack of knowledge about weapon maintenance and which oil or grease to use. Some people are very sparing while others believe the more the better.

Weapons need internal lubrication for working parts and working surfaces to prevent wear and function properly. They also need external lubrication to help protect the finish and prevent rust. Choosing the right type of lubricant can avoid future problems. Almost everyone has a can or bottle of oil or rust preventive in their household and assume it will to the job. The same is true for cleaning kits that come with a can or bottle of oil. We have customers who have a weapon handed down from a grandfather or great uncle that has not been fired in years. They will wipe of the dust and head to the range only to discover that it doesn’t work properly. The trigger is hard to pull, the cylinder release is stuck, the bolt moves slowly, it doesn’t feed the shells properly... the list is endless. The weapon was probably cleaned, but not thoroughly and put away for years. The oil or grease has now hardened and gummed-up the action. Most problems are eliminated with a good cleaning and the proper lube applied. Such was the case with this mint condition Colt Agent revolver. It had not been used in several years and the cylinder was extremely stiff.

Now for the over lubricator... They will saturate a weapon inside and out until it drips and they like the aerosol cans so they can spay away, not realizing the excess oil will attract dust, grit and whatever else is floating around or already inside the action. We see a lot of semi-automatic shotguns that fail to cycle because the rubber o-ring gas seal has deteriorated due to reaction of rubber to oil. We never use any aerosols oils, rust preventives or silicone sprays. We recommend 3-In-One oil and Tetra Gun Grease and use sparingly. Keep all others for general-purpose use around the house and away from your guns.
