1911 Auto Ambidextrous Thumb Safety

Looking to replace your current thumb safety with an ambidextrous one? Well, when looking for which safety to buy BEWARE of those advertised as “Easy To Install” or “Drop-In”. This may be true of an older military issue M1911, but not so for closer tolerance civilian models. A thumb safety is held in the frame by engagement of its shoulder recess and the frame wall. Extending in-wards is the Sear Blocking Stud and this is where the problem occurs. The stud, depending on which model of 1911 auto you have, may have one or two flats and a tangent radius. These areas usually have excess material that requires removal, meaning “Fitted”. Not knowing exactly where to remove the material can cause one to remove too much material making the stud undersize and dangerous. The sear blocking stud immobilizes the sear to prevent firing. So we recommend that fitting and installation be done by a qualified gunsmith to protect all concerned and keep you from having to purchase a second one.

Phosphate (Parkerized) Finishes

Most of us know the durability of a parkerized finish. However the finish does need to be maintained. Parkerizing is a coating that lies on top of the metal instead of penetrating metal like bluing. We will clean a blued finish and then apply a light coat of oil to protect the blued finish but the same is not true for most parkerized finishes. They are neglected due to the durability claim. Parkerizing is a porous coating, which means it has microscopic pores, which can hold moisture from condensation created when a hot barrel cools. Left unattended this moisture can work its way under the coating and on to the metal causing rust and pitting underneath the coating and discoloration (dark spots, light spots, freckling) of the coating. To prevent this the pores can be sealed by applying a light coat of Howard’s Bee Wax on to the coating when you clean the weapon. This will prevent moisture from gathering in the pores, protect the metal underneath and keep the finish looking new.

Which Target Would You Recommend For Pistols?

Question:

Which target would you recommend for pistols?

Answer:

This depends on several factors, type of shooting, target reaction desired and the shooting area. For self defense/quick acquisition training I prefer the Pistol Training Cube and the unpredictable reaction it offers. If you use a public range be sure you check their rules, because some shooting ranges prohibit shooting at targets on the ground.

When stationary shooting is needed, such as trying out a new pistol or practicing before a hunt I use either the Pistolsmith H-Bar Unit or Pistolsmith Ground Unit.
